Why Investing in Crew Training Is Essential for the Future of Yachting

We speak with personable Karine Rayson of the well respected Crew Coach about the need for developing soft skills training in our yachting industry.

In the fast-paced and ever-evolving world of yachting, one thing remains constant: the importance of our crewThey are the heartbeat of any successful yacht operation, and investing in their development and psychological welfare is not just a luxury - it’s a necessity.

As the owner of The Crew Coach, I have the privilege of hearing crew experiences first-hand. These conversations have made it abundantly clear: the industry still has a long way to go in professionalising itself to create a safer, more desirable workplace. While yachting excels at delivering hard skills training, there’s an undeniable gap in the development of soft skills that foster self-awareness, emotional intelligence, and psychological safety.

Training Beyond Compliance

The Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) mandates that all seafarers are trained and certified according to international standards. Regulation 1.3 on Training and Qualifications emphasises that crew must be equipped to perform their duties competently, aligning with the Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW).

However, we must ask ourselves: is mandatory training alone enough to equip crew to meet the demands of their roles effectively? Reports of poor leadership, bullying, harassment, and behavioural misconduct—both onboard and ashore—paint a stark picture of where the industry continues to fall short.

While systemic changes take time, we must focus on what is within our immediate control. Rather than waiting for regulations to catch up with the industry’s needs, it’s time for crew and key stakeholders to take action.

The Case for a Dedicated Training Budget

As an advocate for crew welfare and professional growth, I firmly believe that yachts should allocate a dedicated training budget for crew development. This investment is more than a financial commitment—it’s a statement that says, “We value you and want to see you reach your potential.”

Training that focuses on understanding oneself and others fosters better teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving. I’ve witnessed the transformative power of this approach through the students who have completed our Advanced Leadership Course. They return to their yachts more confident, self-aware, and equipped to handle complex interpersonal dynamics.

A Win-Win for Crew and Owners

The benefits of investing in crew training extend far beyond the crew themselves. A well-trained, emotionally intelligent team is a significant asset to yacht owners. They work more efficiently, solve problems proactively, and create a more harmonious onboard environment, ultimately enhancing the owner and guest experience.

Nelson Mandela once said:

Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”

Let us use this wisdom to transform the yachting industry. By prioritising crew development, we can foster a culture of excellence, safety, and respect. Together, (crew and shore based companies) we can build an industry that values not only skill but also character and well-being.
