Hurricane Beryl Decimates Caribbean Islands

"Armageddon-like" - in half an hour, Carriacou was flattened.

The earliest hurricane on record to develop into a category four storm, with 'life threatening' winds and sea surges proved catastrophic to the Windward islands. Strengthening at a record pace due to unseasonably warm sea temperatures, this monster hurricane with winds of 140mph pounded and decimated the south-eastern Caribbean islands of Carriacou and Petit Martinique, Union, Mayreau and Canouan particularly, but also Barbados, St. Vincent and Grenada.

In a video briefing on Tuesday, Grenada's prime minister Dickon Mitchell described the situation as "Armageddon-like" - in half an hour, Carriacou was flattened. Ralph Gonsalves, prime minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, said in a radio interview that the country's Union Island was "flattened" by Beryl and that it would "be a Herculean effort to rebuild."

Hurricane Beryl continued her path of destruction thrashing Jamaica with intense wind and rain, causing floods and power outage, then the Cayman Islands, and devastating flooding in Venezuela this past week. The death toll from the powerful Category 4 hurricane climbed to at least 10 across the entire region, with tens of thousands having lost their homes.

There is much support from all the Caribbean Islands, with vessels leaving from St. Maarten, Antigua, Martinique and Grenada filled with donated items, from clothing, foods and medicines to building materials and temporary power supplies.

With many relief funds and GoFundMe pages being set up, here we share several that we can recommend to those wishing to donate locally and from abroad.

Jeremie Tronet

Professional kite surfer Jeremie Tronet has led the way, setting up a 'Help Union Island' GoFundMe page that has attracted a huge amount of donations, raising over Eu 218,000 at the time of writing this article.

"This feels like a nightmare ! On Monday one of the strongest hurricane ever recorded in our part of the world has destroyed the Grenadines and Union Island. Everything everyone worked so hard for over the years is gone and destroyed.
I have created this GoFundMe to try and help the local population with everything they need to survive the next most horrible days and weeks as everything is broken and destroyed - there is nothing left.
With your funds we will purchase food, supplies, generators and as much necessary items to be used by the local population."

Jeremie Tronet
operated JT Pro Centre kite school out of Union Island. He, like almost everyone on the island, has lost his home (see photos above) and his business. This past week he's done a phenomenal job in Martinique mobilizing food, equipment, working with the French Navy and suppliers, sending several planes to Union Island with food, tents, generators, and a wide range of goods so urgently needed. Donated monies will be helping the people in the devastated islands of Union, Canouan and Mayreau.

World Central Kitchen

World Central Kitchen has already mobilised across the Caribbean, doing what it does best - responding to a natural disaster by preparing nourishing fresh foods for the communities impacted by this storm, flying in to Union Island, St. Vincent and Grenada from Antigua using Calvinair Helicopters, with freshly made foods to distribute, and helping with logistics setting up community kitchens.

MAYAG

The Marine and Yachting Association of Grenada (MAYAG) is a government recognised agency, providing monetary support to those affected by Hurricane Beryl, in Carriacou and Petit Martinique.
They are fundraising, organizing volunteers, deliveries, and taking donations if you are in Grenada, which should be delivered to Gleans Garage, Kirani James Boulevard on the Lagoon near Island Water World.

MAYAG President, Dr. Dawn De Coteau travelled with the first shipment on 5th July, to ensure they got to the people who need them. If you can help with yacht transport, please contact MAYAG to register your yacht.
