Benchmarking Bangkok: Asia Poseidon’s Technical Refit

The 2014 Benetti-built motor yacht Asia Poseidon recently underwent an extensive four-week refit at Clearvac Engineering Asia’s specialist Superyacht Refit Shipyard in Bangkok, having arrived from her home berth in Pattaya. Once secured in Dry Dock 2, works commenced immediately, with all departments operating in unison to deliver a tightly executed project on schedule.

Designed externally by Stefano Righini and with interiors by Zuretti Interior Design, Asia Poseidon is a well-known presence in the Asia-Pacific region. Her recent dry docking involved a full suite of technical maintenance works in line with RINA class survey requirements.

Among the first stages of the project, all diesel fuel was extracted and polished via a carbon filtration system before being returned to storage. Cleaning of all fuel, freshwater, black, and grey tanks was completed to enable thorough internal inspections.

The hull was fully cleaned to remove marine growth, preparing the surface for antifouling and the installation of new hull anodes and through-hull scoops.

RINA-compliant propulsion works included removal of the propellers, rudders and shafts for inspection and testing. New shaft cutlass bearings and rudder bush bearings were installed, and laser alignment was conducted across the bore, shafts, and gearbox. Fresh chockfast was applied. The propellers were dynamically balanced, polished, reinstalled, and finished with a protective coating of Propspeed.

The yacht’s swim platform was also removed to carry out fibreglass repairs to its hinge components, alongside a full service of the hydraulic systems. Additionally, all through-hull valves, manifolds, and sea strainers were removed, overhauled, and pressure-tested to meet class standards.

Further exterior work included Awlgrip paint refinishing across select areas and a full recaulking of the teak decks. HVAC systems were deep-cleaned as part of full air hygiene servicing — including disinfection of ductwork, fan coils, and air handlers. Galley and laundry extraction systems were cleaned to reduce fire risk, and ozone treatment was applied across all interior spaces to neutralise any odours associated with refit works.

Mechanical works concluded with a full overhaul of the bow thruster and the installation of a new bilge pump.

Reflecting on the strategic positioning of Bangkok as a serious contender in the global refit landscape, Robert ‘Doc’ Taylor, Managing Director of Clearvac Engineering Asia, shared the following:

Bangkok is fast becoming a global hotspot for superyacht refits, and this facility is proud to be at the forefront of that evolution. With access to skilled local labour and regionally sourced materials, the shipyard is able to deliver high-quality workmanship with notable cost and time efficiencies. The local workforce includes experienced craftsmen and engineers with specialist expertise in luxury yacht systems and the complex demands of refit projects.

For vessels operating within the Asia-Pacific region, this strategic location offers clear advantages—removing the need for long-distance transits and providing convenient access for yachts based in or chartering throughout Southeast Asia’s premier cruising grounds. Efficient processes allow for quick turnarounds, which is ideal for yachts on tight schedules. Combined with world-class capabilities and the kind of warm hospitality that makes time in Bangkok enjoyable for owners and crew alike, the city is well-positioned to become a leading destination for global refit work.
